It is good for us to understand the theology of the end-times, but we must approach it with reverence. The lesson was prepared for older students. We are not told precisely what it is that troubles Daniel. The saints should also expect the wicked to prosper, for a season. God is in no hurry to fulfill His promises, whether His promise of the eternal kingdom for all the saints or the promise of eternal destruction and judgment for sinners. The Ancient of Days is a designation for God, not found elsewhere in the Bible. That was bad enough, from the religious leaders perspective, but the way in which He answered them was the last straw. Now, in verse 23, the angelic interpreter explains the relationship of the boastful beast and the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. As Daniel watches, the wings are torn off the beast, and the creature stands erect like a man and a human mind is given to it. He will rule over all nations forever. For the remainder of Nebuchadnezzars life, it seems that religion in the kingdom of Babylon was at least favorable to the worship of the God of the Jews. Dan 2:1-4 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. This was when his life took a sharp turn. If not, he could never have become airborne again. Prophecy speaks not only of the joys and glories of Gods kingdom to come but of the suffering and tribulation preceding the eternal blessings of the kingdom of God. (2) Why do you think Daniel summarized his dream when he wrote it rather than tell it in full (see verse 1)? As Daniel sought to discover more truth about the fourth beast he added some details that he had left out of his first description. (1) Daniel 7 is the last chapter written in Aramaic in the Book of Daniel. Would Belshazzar toast the gods of gold, silver, wood and stone with the sacred temple vessels? The kingdom of God would not be established in Daniels lifetime, nor in the life of those who returned to the land of Israel from their captivity. Before the Israelites were delivered out of Egypt and brought into the land of Canaan, they suffered at the hands of the Egyptians. The saints of the Highest One are given all the kingdoms of the earth for an everlasting kingdom. Through this dream, King Nebuchadnezzar learned that only God's Kingdom will last forever. The stone cut out of the mountain represented the kingdom of God that would fill the earth. The entire empire was conquered between 334 and 330 B.C., just four years. Verse 17. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. These horns are also kings, from whom kingdoms arise (verse 24). 8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, every one whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. 76 It is not altogether accurate to refer to chapters 1-6 as historical and 7-12 as prophetic. Between the first half of verse 23 and the second half of this verse we have what has been referred to as the great parenthesis in the Old Testament, the mystery of the church and the Church Age which was not revealed to the world until after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. In spite of all these beasts do and say, in spite of their power and even their success, neither they nor their kingdoms will last. Prophecy is necessary then so that men are reassured of divine deliverance and blessing, as well as divine judgment (see 2 Peter 2:4-9). Peter reminds us of Gods patience, but His patience has a determined end. This kings boasting turns to blasphemy. Chapter 7 - In the first vision Daniel sees the same kingdoms, but this time he sees them as beasts. How easily we turn from what is revealed to speculate about what has been concealed (see Deuteronomy 29:29). Daniel went at once and obtained royal permission for more time, so that he could tell the king what the dream meant. Daniel does not date this dream as he did the earlier dream (cf. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. (3) These prophecies must be understood in light of their historical background as provided in Daniel, in the inspired revelation provided by other portions of Scripture, and the cautious use of supplementary information by reliable historical documents or study. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. Daniel described the beast as having iron teeth and that it devours, crushes, and tramples under its feet all that stands in its way. He only called on him in a moment of sheer panic when no one else could help, and only then because of the recommendation of the queen mother. Editing is often evident in the Bible (see John 20:30-31; 31:25). This designation refers to God the Father in a way that stresses His eternality, dignity, and power. The other three are removed from power but allowed to live for some time after their removal (verse 12). Daniel is greatly distressed by the vision which he sees in chapter 7. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:89, NASB95)[7] You have a responsibility because you know what the end will bring. 1 John 3:1-3 says, See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. Introduction to Daniel 11 Part of the dream seemed good, and part of it seemed bad. The nation of Israel has been set aside by divine discipline in the present times of the Gentiles, which began with Nebuchadnezzar. He could not figure out what the dream meant, so he wanted his advisors to explain it to him. He was at ease when he received the vision, and then he became fearful, and his mind alarmed him (4:4-5). 24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them,81 and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings. 27 Then the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. 28 At this point the revelation ended. Even the fate of this fourth beast is different than his three predecessors, as his life and his kingdom seem to end at the same moment. Who is the Son of Man? Because of this we can have a greater understanding of this dream than Daniel did. In Revelation it is also referred to as 42 months and 1260 days which all work out to 3 years. The ten horns are of interest to him, but most of all that final horn which arose, surpassing and replacing three others and speaking boastfully. Belshazzar came to power several years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar and seems to have turned completely away from the God of Israel. What it does not destroy or consume with its teeth, it crushes under foot, much like a bull in a china shop. We know that Jesus came the first time to die and that He will come again to subdue His enemies and establish His kingdom. Public sentiment was turning against this foreign religion, and the Babylonians, including Belshazzar, wanted a return to their old time religion the pagan worship of the gods of Babylon. (3) This chapter contains the major segment of Daniel, which is primarily prophetic, although it does not contain the first prophecy in the Book of Daniel. As the beast continues to boast, a second scene commences in Daniels vision, and for a period of time both scenes run simultaneously. Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. Episode 5 of "How I Met Your Father" Season 2 tested the friendships of everyone in the group. Those who rejected the Lord Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of Man, would mourn when they saw Him returning in the clouds: And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30). Considering this text has changed my opinion about the gap in the prophecies of the Old Testament. At the outset of the account of his vision, Daniel wants his reader to know the historical context in which this prophecy was given and to consider its interpretation and application in the light of that context. Before long, Daniel was explaining the dreams of King Nebuchadnezzar. Je. As I read through the statements men have made about the God of Israel in the first six chapters of Daniel, I find that what men came to know and to acknowledge through history, God declares through prophecy. The first time in Daniel 7:13, he is referring to Messiah, who will sit on the eternal throne of His father, David. He staying the decree is brought to the king. Through the vision of a magnificent, awe-inspiring statue, God reveals the future for Gentile kings and their kingdoms. This horn is called by different names in the New Testament: In 2 Thessalonians 2:3 the little horn is called the man of lawlessness. Revelation 13:1-2 calls the little horn the beast. The name he is best known by in found in 1 John 2:18-24 where John calls the little horn the Antichrist.. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. Our study of this chapter will isolate what troubled Daniel about the future. And the high priest said to Him, I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus said to him, You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, AND COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN (Matthew 26:59-64). This is represented by the four heads on Daniels leopard beast. He will abolish all the religious holidays and seek to abolish Gods law in an attempt to destroy the Jewish people. It is virtually the opposite of the term beast. The expression, Son of man, is not new to Daniel. 13 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.77 14 And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. (2) Chapters 7 and 8, while written in different languages, are written during the reign of Belshazzar and somehow linked by the author in Daniel 8:1. Here is a man that has faithfully walked with his God his whole life. Then the time had arrived for the saints to take possession of the kingdom. 4 The first was like a lion and had the wings of an eagle. Suffering is an inseparable part of the process which leads to glory. Daniel 2:1-23 - The King's Dream (Pastor Nate Wagner) A. Nebuchadnezzar's dream. Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. In our passage, Daniel asks for and receives an explanation. (6) Prophecy is written to sober the saints. Daniel was not satisfied with just a summary of his dream, especially of the fourth beast that was so different than the other three, he wanted more detail. The horn continues to sound off while the court is being set up for judgment. For the time, it was these Jewish leaders who were beastly, arrogant, and blasphemous, and because of this they would suffer divine judgment. In Daniels dream the Medo-Persian empire and it king Cyrus was represented by the bear. This morning we want to look at verses 15-28 and the interpretation of Daniels dream. Please stand in honor of the reading of Gods Word and follow along as I read verses 15-28. Daniel said the king's dream was about a giant statue that was destroyed by a stone cut out of a mountain. An eleventh king then rises to power, different from the others, replacing three of the previous kings. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these: It not only bore witness to the conversion of this king, but encouraged all of the subjects of Babylonian rule to worship the God of Israel. The beasts are hardly worthy of prose, but the court of heaven deserves a description of the finest words. Two weeks ago, after studying Revelation 13 and seeing how much it relates to Daniel 7 I decided we needed to go back and review Daniel 7 which we have not looked at since 2011. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time. (1) Why does Daniel indicate the historical setting of the vision he receives in chapter 7? This angel, beginning in the second half of verse 23 is describing the revived Roman empire which is yet future. Suddenly, the boasting beast is silenced by death, and his body is cast into the burning fire. He not only speaks against the Most High, he oppresses the saints. The point of this prophecy is not to tell us who future kings will be, but rather what they will be like. In the latter days, an unusually powerful and evil king will arise, who will blaspheme God and oppress the people of God. Let Thy hand be upon the man of Thy right hand, Upon the son of man whom Thou didst make strong for Thyself (Psalm 80:17). What is its message to Daniel, to the Jews, and to us? Desiring a more detailed explanation, he apparently asked for one and received it. The distance in time of the fulfillment of Daniel 7 said something very important to the captive Jews of Daniels day. JPS Tanakh 1917 God would strike him down suddenly too and bring his kingdom to a swift end. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Those who populate the earth after the tribulation will give their allegiance to Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. Daniel was terrified or alarmed by the scenes he had seen in his mind and desired to understand what they meant. As the destruction of the last beast and the blaspheming horn came as a complete shock to them, so the Lords coming will catch unbelievers unprepared as well (24:27-39). [4] We of the present Age, the church will reign with Jesus Christ as His bride. Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. The wrenching off of the wings and the transformation of the lion, making him stand on two legs and giving him the mind of a man was a picture of God humbling Nebuchadnezzar and then restoring him to his right mind, you can read about this in Daniel 4. 2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. As we move into the second half of Daniel 7 and begin to dissect Daniels dream with the help of Gods Word and the help of history past because some of this dream which was yet future for Daniel is past history for us. Prophecy is always practical and relevant to the person(s) receiving it. We have already seen this phrase time, times, and half a time in Revelation. It devoured and crushed, and trampled down the remainder with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. Daniel 2 (the second chapter of the Book of Daniel) tells how Daniel related and interpreted a dream of Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon.In his night dream, the king saw a gigantic statue made of four metals, from its head of gold to its feet of mingled iron and clay; as he watched, a stone "not cut by human hands" destroyed the statue and became a mountain filling the whole world. During this ten-nation confederation another ruler will rise as described by the little horn. If taken seriously, we will find the future sobering as well. The blasphemous horn of Daniel 7, which goes so far as to oppose the people of God, is suddenly taken by death, and his kingdom is removed. 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. Then He said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you! (Ezekiel 2:1). He couldn't sleep. This little horn is more intelligent and more arrogant than the other horns. Both sets of kingdoms are brought to a sudden end and are replaced by an eternal kingdom. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. But in the end, God will judge the wicked and establish His kingdom for His saints. Belshazzars rise to power and ascent to the throne seems to have inaugurated a new age for Babylon. Centuries must therefore pass before the prophecies of Daniel are fulfilled. When that day comes for them, it is too late to repent. Agreeing with God that they are sinners but believing that Jesus Christ death paid the penalty for their sin, that He was buried, and rose from the dead three days later triumphant over sin, Satan, and death forever. The use of the word time in Daniel is understood to be years. The beasts are a horrifying and frightening sight; the heavenly court scene is one of regal splendor and beauty. The other prophecies were revealed to King Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar and interpreted by Daniel. The account of the writing on the wall and the death of Belshazzar (obviously the last year of his reign) is found in Daniel 5. When He came with His kingdom, they would be sure to recognize Him (24:27). We could never predict the goals God has determined, nor the means He has ordained for history to reach them. Daniel was an intelligent young Jew living in Jerusalem during the late 600s B.C. Each beast has its own unique characteristics. Chapter 7 reveals in broad terms what the future holds. It should give you a caring heart toward the unsaved as you seek to win them to the Lord. The three and a half years referred to here in Daniel is the last half of the tribulation, also called the Great Tribulation and the Time of Jacobs Trouble. As we shall show later, the content of the prophecy of Daniel 7 is very closely related to the reign of Belshazzar.
