As we listen for Gods word in the sermon this morning, Id like for us to take a closer look at this second story the transfiguration of Jesus and, in particular, Id like for us to think about the radiance of God: What was it about being in the presence of God that was so apparent to the others the Israelites out in wilderness, the disciples up on Mount Herman? From the looks of the text, it would not be an unwarranted leap to think these three did not tell even the other nine disciples what had taken place. Listen to him! So it is possible that this little detail on the timing of the Transfiguration could be a hint pointing toward Easter and the glory that awaited Jesus also then. This event was unprecedented. Scripture assures us that we were all created in the image of God, but as we hustle past people in the malls, as we jostle next to them on the train, as we get annoyed with them when they crowd us in our airplane seat, we miss it. This word, exodon, provides another parallel with Moses, who led the Exodus from Egypt. Lets make three tents: Sobering. Lukes account is closely related to the First Lesson, in which Moses, after being in the presence of God to receive the Ten Commandments, comes down from Mount Sinai, and the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God (Exodus 34:29). Between Jesus birth and his death, this may be the most significant event in the Gospels. As such, it brings to an end the first major portion of the church year. There is the voice from heaven, declaring that Jesus is Gods Son, recalling the same declaration at his baptism (3:22), followed by the saying that the disciples are to listen to Jesus (9:35). That is a natural reaction. The story of Elijahs going to heaven is told at 2 Kings 2:11-12. At the top of the mountain, they found themselves in the presence of God, who testified to the divine status of his son, Jesus.
